BOXfest 2022 - REBUILD - Highlights

The return of BOXfest July 13th 2022 at the London Transport Museum was a great success, with a wide range of the industry’s top engineers and senior technical managers coming together for the first time since the beginning of 2020.

Following on from NAB, BOXfest 2022 highlighted key technologies and products, offering an opportunity to look into technology roadmaps and market trends with an audience across the fields of Broadcast, ProAV and Post. Concentrating on customer case studies and real world application of technology, this year’s event focused on the most salient topics of recent months.

REBUILD - USING TECHNOLOGY TO ENGINEER A BETTER NORMAL

The event kicked off with a keynote speech from Boxer’s MD Marc Risby, exploring the dramatic impact covid has had on our lives, becoming an enforced architect of change that has made us reconsider everything we do. 

Looking at how, moving forward, events such as this can no longer be classed as unprecedented, Marc discussed how we need to learn from them and make plans going forward, and where he sees the future of IP.

This set the agenda for the day, and an eclectic range of speakers and panellists took the opportunity to talk about how we all had to rapidly change what we did for Covid, and that this has driven some amazing innovation. 

Speakers covered a wide range of topics, including what new technologies have worked for them over the past two years, and what didn’t, what we can do better moving forward and how can we become resilient, secure, remote and flexible? 

Topics included designing for resilience; streaming over the public internet; the on-prem / cloud debate; and remote working.

Kieron Maughan - Director, Nellcote

Kieron Maughan is a respected IT professional who has spent over 25 years in the industry, working with medium to large / enterprise businesses globally. He has the capacity to bridge the gap between business needs, technical and Sales and works collaboratively with an open approach developing long term relationships. Kieron is a co-founder of Nellcote, a CREST accredited Cyber Security Company that has a number of specialisations, including Cloud dev Ops and Opensource.   

Duncan Beattie - Chief Solutions Officer, GB Labs

Duncan Beattie has been instrumental in helping to merge production with the IP world of networking for over 30 years. Moving to GB Labs in 2007, he was fundamental in the introduction of GB Labs’ high-performance network attached storage solutions for Media in 2009. Now as Chief Solutions Officer, he is able to share his wealth of knowledge to determine the challenges customers are facing whilst developing creative workflows to address them.

Darren Plant - Global Reseller Director, Synamedia

With 25 years of experience working within Digital TV & Audio vendors and broadcasters, from encoding & distributing digital audio content across satellite to cable headends at Music Choice, being part of the launch team for SKY Digital, managing support organisations dealing with MPEG-2 & AVC video compression platforms across multiple FIFA World Cups and Olympics at Tandberg Television, to now managing the global reseller network at Synamedia.  Darren work closely with Boxer Systems to drive adoption of Synamedia solutions within UK & Ireland.

Josh Lomas - Account Manager, Boxer Systems

Josh’s role at Boxer is to help realise and provide complete workflow solutions for video, I.P, remote and file based workflows for customers, within an array of sectors such as the M&E, broadcast, educational and corporate markets.

Paul Honrud - CEO, Diskover Data

Paul Honrud builds on his expertise in data and storage management to drive innovative customer solutions. Combined with his wealth of knowledge in growing technology-based businesses, he has a proven track record with both start-ups and enterprise software companies. From product concept to global implementation, Paul has excelled in leading teams and generating new revenue.

Paul founded Data Frameworks, technology focused on large scale data management, which was acquired by Dell in August 2018.  Paul is also an inventor with patents on data storage management that is driven by business objectives.

Paul Honrud served in business development roles at Baydel, and Systems Industries. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science and a Master Of Business Administration from San Diego State University.

Nick Kayworth - Senior Product Manager, Telestream

Responsible for the Product Management of Telestream’s brand new proxy-less remote playback solution “GLIM” and Telestream’s Media processing Platform “Vantage”, specialising in Multiscreen and IPTV VOD Transcoders.  Nick has 20 years’ experience in the Broadcast, Post Production and OTT industry, with a background in solution architecture, helping  leading post-production, OTT and broadcast companies across the world implement end to end video processing workflows.

Julien Libeau - Europe based, HQ France - Application Engineer and Product Manager, WorldCast Connect

As Product Manager for Kybio, Julien Libeau is responsible for product strategy and development. After joining the WorldCast group in 2016 he evolved from managing hardware solutions at WorldCast Systems to overseeing product development within the group’s software division, CONNECT. He holds an Engineering degree in Network and Telecommunications and is passionate about creating innovative, advanced digital and media technology. Through this experience, he offers a strong understanding of the best practices and challenges users face when monitoring complex infrastructures. In his current role, he is the architect for Kybio, a new generation NMS that is unique through its high user-friendliness and powerful combination of modules.
