AJA Ki Pro first look
2/6/2009

On Friday last week Boxer was in Soho for the UK dealers session of the AJA Ki Pro World Tour. The Ki Pro is designed to be attached directly to a camera and record in Pro Res during the shoot. You can then take out the HDD or optional SSD (Solid State Disk) and plug it into your Mac using FW800 and drag the video directly into Final Cut. This is one of the things that AJA has been working on for the past 2 years!

It really is a wonderfully simple piece of kit. With the optional exoskeleton it is designed to sit directly below your camera of choice (so as not to disturb the weight balance) connecting via SD/HD-SDI, HDMI or analogue inputs. All connections are on the right side to keep them away from you during camera operation. Once you are connected up you press record on the camera, record on the Ki Pro and you are ready to go, all very simple. You can even trigger recording via ethernet as the Ki Pro has a built in web server or via an iPhone app.

There are three types of storage available - the included hard disk drive, optional solid state disk for more demanding environments and an express card slot. Each have their own benefits but one cool feature is the ability to do continuous recording as the express card will continue any recording while you swap out the disks. Limitations on the speed of the express cards restrict their recording to standard rather than HQ Pro Res but it should only be a matter of time before technology enhancements remove this shortcoming.

When the shoot is over all you do is pop out the disk and mount it instantly as an OSX drive to your MacBook Pro or Mac Pro. The media is ready straight away with no transcoding or capture required. It even includes an SD to HD upconverter, down-converter and cross-converter enabling format standardisation during record no matter what camera is being used.

As it connects to any camera, you can use it with a 8-bit camera but record in 10-bit, bypassing the internal camera 8-bit recording by going direct from lens to the Ki Pro which is a great way to upgrade 8-bit kit.

All in all, a very impressive piece of kit that ships late June/early July for the great price of £3,110.

Don't just take our word for it - take a look below for an early review.

    NAB 2009: Major releases
    27/4/2009

    NAB 2009 - April 20th - 23rd

NAB 2009 has now ended with most people reporting a positive show even though visitor numbers appeared to be lower than in previous years. Once again a number of our suppliers used the show to release their new products. Continue below for a run through of the key releases:

    AJA

AJA surprised everyone with some big releases. The Ki Pro has generated a massive buzz already as it promises to simplify the ingest and edit process. Simply attach it to your video camera to record directly onto the Ki Pros hard disk as ProRes 422, then using FireWire 800 plug the hard disk into your edit machine to import the file directly into a Final Cut timeline. No more codec or format hassles or waiting for real-time ingest off tape.

They also introduced the Kona LHI with impressive analogue and digital I/O including 3G/HD/SD SDI, HDMI and Component, Composite or S-Video, the Io Express for portable video I/O and two new mini-converters the HDP2 and HI5 3G.

    Ensemble Designs

Over 20 new products from Ensemble Designs with the main talking point being the 3G products for their Avenue and BrightEye lines. Two stand out products are the Avenue 9400 3Gb/s Signal Generator and Test Signal Generator and the BrightEye 72 3G/HD/SD SDI digital to analogue video converter with HDMI confidence monitor out.

    Omneon

Omneon brought the MediaDeck GX to NAB. It’s a complete channel playout solution combining video server playout, graphics and audio processing controlled by the user’s preferred automation system. It should be a great solution for broadcasters wanting to launch new or additional broadcast channels at a great price point and be easier to support.

    Award Winners

Boxer products awarded the Broadcast Engineering NAB2009 Pick Hit accolade includes the AJA Video Ki Pro, Omneon MediaDeck GX, Omnitek OTM1000 and Telestream Pipeline.

    Polatis demonstrates HD fibre connectivity
    10/9/2008

Trinity™ Optical Switch Facilitates Bi-Directional Control and HD Video

Polatis Inc., a supplier of high performance optical switch technologies, will demonstrate ‘base station to HD camera connectivity’ – critical for outside broadcast applications – on it’s booth (8.B20) at IBC 2008, September 12th-16th.

The demonstration will see the Trinity™ family of optical video routing switches facilitating bi-directional control and HD traffic over fibre. Trinity will connect with SMPTE bi-directional hybrid cable to a CCU/Base Station and Sony HD Camera. Trinity is specifically designed for the broadcast, outdoor broadcast and post-production industries.

“We are excited to be demonstrating our Trinity optical switch connected with SMPTE bi-directional hybrid cable to a CCU/Base Station and HD Camera – this is live proof of the performance of this optical switch in a broadcast environment, and the reason why we are able to OEM this product to some of the industry’s biggest equipment manufacturers,” said Sean Gordon, Sales Director of Video Broadcast Products, Polatis. “This shows the benefit of pure optical switches over so-called optical-electrical-optical switches for broadcasters in general and outdoor broadcast applications in particular. It will be a fantastic demonstration for the audience at IBC.”

Boxer - UK Distributor for Polatis Optical Routers
    1/8/2008

Deal to Bring Optical Video Routing to the UK

Cambridge, UK, Billerica, MA., – 01 August, 2008 – Polatis Inc., a supplier of high performance optical switch technologies, has announced the appointment of Boxer Systems as UK distributor for its Trinity™ family of optical video routing switches, designed for the broadcast and post-production industries.

Trinity offers unlimited data bandwidth and transparency to any format or protocol - analog, digital and RF. Polatis selected Boxer Systems as it brings both technical excellence and a longstanding relationship with many of the UK's top broadcast customers.

“We are seeing considerable demand for high-end optical transport solutions in the global video and broadcast markets, driven by the need to distribute quality high definition video,” said Sean Gordon, Director of Sales, Video Products, at Polatis. “This targeted distribution agreement will allow Polatis to capitalize on this demand.

"We are proud to work with Boxer Systems as they are a leader in their field and have relationships with the top players in this space. They offer sophisticated systems integration services, and our optical switch product can become a key element and be well represented by Boxer's technically oriented sales and marketing team."

Marc Risby, Director of Technology, Boxer Systems, added, "As our customers begin to implement fibre infrastructures with the growth of HD, they will need low loss switching technologies. The Polatis product range meets this need, offering flexibility to a wide variety of signal types and scalability to handle ever-growing video data rates."

The Trinity series is designed specifically for the video transport and broadcast market. It supports virtually all protocols and feed rates – AES, SMPTE-276M, 259M, and 292M, ASI/DVB, NTSC, PAL, QAM, and others. Under-pinning the Trinity design is Polatis’ unique beam-steering technology. Unlike other photonic solutions, Trinity can establish and maintain connection routes without a signal present, in a pre-provisioned ‘ready and waiting state’. Not relying on an optical signal feedback to maintain the connection also means no modulation is introduced to the signal, a feature valued by customers who use Polatis products for RF-over-fiber applications today. Like all Polatis products, traffic can be bi-directional, and carry single or multiple wavelengths.

For more information please contact Boxer on 01582 466100 or via info@boxer.co.uk. Alternatively follow this link to visit the Polatis website www.polatis.com.

Ensemble Designs at the Beijing Olympics
    29/7/2008

    Beijing, China – 18 July 2008

The IBC International Broadcast Center for the Olympics in Beijing has standardized on the 7420 logo inserter from Ensemble Designs. The Avenue 7420 is used for branding feeds that are distributed from the IBC. Additionally, there are 40 unique venues, all of which have Ensemble Designs’ Avenue 5400 and 7405 Sync pulse and test signal generators that are providing basic sync and reference for video and audio paths.

The IBC is the transmission and distribution center for an enormous amount of signals. Signals from every Olympics venue come in on fiber for synchronization and routing. The IBC’s transmission and distribution facility acts as a switching center for rights holders. A selection of feeds are also distributed to the uplink farm and back to reporters. Feeds are branded with Ensemble Designs’ logo inserters prior to distribution to correspondents.

A special in-house TV distribution network with over 40 channels is provided to correspondents and reporters. Across the course of the day a wide range of different sources are provided on different channels. A reporter in the main correspondent center could use this system to watch various channels. He might watch time trials for swimming on one channel, view crowd shots on another channel, and simultaneously view sailing on a third channel. This system allows reporters to cover many events without having to physically be in several places at once.

The IBC receives full-bandwidth uncompressed HD feeds on fiber from the majority of venues as they are within fiber distance of the IBC. For distant venues such as those hosting the equestrian and sailing events, signals are MPEG compressed at a high bit rate and then delivered back to the IBC.

Signals are switched according to published program schedule. All signals are fed into a matrix of Ensemble Designs’ 7420s for individual branding of each channel. Some of the 7420 outputs are down converted into CATV system. Each 7420 module can output two independent pictures, which makes this particular logo inserter quite cost effective for the Olympics application. The IBC requested a customer dual-channel mode from Ensemble Designs for their installation.

The 7420 logo inserter can be used with HD and SD video signals and has 2 linear keyers. The on-board Secure Digital card provides the user a simple way of transferring logos from computer to module for keying. Animations, sound clips and stills are supported.

The IBC is housed in the New Beijing Convention Center, which has been modified to serve the Olympics. Buildings, offices, studio and control rooms have been built inside the convention center, some permanent and some temporary. Where needed, surface mounted conduit has been added to the facility. Temporary standby generation has been brought in to meet the extensive power requirements.

All 40 sports venues use the Avenue 5400 and 7405 Sync pulse generators and test signal generators for the video and audio paths. In order to make the system simpler to organize and maintain, trucks all originate in HD and other signals are distributed as needed. There is a multilateral path that is for “rights only” broadcasters. This consists of a redundant path with two fibers running in two different directions. The Avenue 5400 is used to feed pathological and colour bars to the path and to ID each venue (e.g. “sailing 1”.) The Olympics staff engineers asked Ensemble Designs to add a moving element to the test signals to help alert if a path is frozen. The Ensemble equipment is also used to perform critical measurements of the transport paths.

IBC staff arrived in Beijing in February and will be on-site through October. After a hiatus the IBC staff will go on to Vancouver for the next Olympics implementation.

Planning for Vancouver is already in consideration and the IBC staff is planning to use a similar signal flow there. A clever, portable rack system allows the IBC staff to easily pull out the gear and ship it back to Spain and then on to Vancouver.

Boxer Systems has been providing Ensemble Designs products into the UK for a number of years so are well placed to specify and integrate the equipment to match your requirements. For more information please contact Alex Papps at Boxer on 01582 466100 or via alex.papps@boxer.co.uk.
